The message of October is Olympic Effort, & I am sharing stories to motivate my students to raise the bar this month! If you were one of the proud and strong that trained with the morning groups today, you heard the inspiring story about Billy Mills. He was virtually unknown as he entered the 1964 Tokyo Olympics for the 10,000 meter (6.2 mile) event. In fact, during the preliminaries his time was a full minute slower than Ron Clarke, the world record holder for this event-and the one who would set the pace for the race.  Despite being the underdog, and definitely not favored to even stay in the race, Billy Mills not only won the gold for this event…but finished in 28:24.4 to set a new world record for the event. Take a few minutes and watch this awesome clip of Billy Mills defying the odds against him & giving EXTRAORDINARY Olympic Effort to take home the gold! It will give you goose bumps!
